El derecho a descansar
El derecho a descansar

(The Right to Rest)
digital illustration
2020

This phrase comes from the indigenous women of the Zapatista Liberation Movement who, in their caracoles discussed and drafted a Women’s Revolutionary Law, named among their proposed rights THE RIGHT TO REST. Black women throughout have also demanded recognition of a right to rest, from Rachel Cargle to Sonya Renee Taylor to Tricia Hersey. The right to rest protects and encompasses our capacity to imagine, recharge, observe, sleep, dream, and reflect. Rest is a fundamental and necessary part of what it means to be fully human.
